VanniTech Students Promote Computer Awareness in North-East

The students of Vanni Institute of Technology (VanniTech) successfully carried out another quarter break program, titled “Introduction to Computers”, a two weeks program, during second half of this October.

This time the institute was taken a big step towards bringing high tech awareness to the younger generation in backward areas of the North-East region. In order to make the technology transfer easier, the institute formed a special unit, “Tech Mobile Unit”, which includes 7-8 students of the institute, Multimedia projector and Screen, Desktop computers, Laptops, Palm PDA, Digital cameras, Car Simulator, Diesel Power Generator, Van and more. The mobile unit traveled over thousands of kilometers and faced numerous challenges such as heavy rain falls, flooded bridges, uncomfortable accommodations, check-points and elephant threats.

The program was in the form of a seminar and accompanied with MS PowerPoint slides multimedia projectors. There were demos on classical applications of computers in our day to day life. The seminars were taken place for about 120 minutes and ended with a small hands-on session to audience. On average a seminar was covered 120 students.

About 4650 students from 44 schools from all eight districts of the North-East of Sri Lanka were benefited by the program. Feedback forms convey that VanniTech students conducted the seminars in a professional way and they set a standard for IT awareness programs.

“We took a high risk of sending our valuable equipments to very remote locations”, said Shantharahavan, President of Vanni Institute of Technology. “Any failures in the fields would affect our academic operations. But it is worth of taking this risk as the audiences are very hunger to learn the technology”.
