VanniTech Spearheads Expansion and Replication of Successful Mathakal Initiative

December 31, 2005 [VanniTech, Kilinochchi]: Vanni Institute of Technology (VanniTech) has announced the success of its recent initiative, Kiruba Computer Learning Center , a community based computer training center set-up and managed by the institute at St. Joseph Maha Vidyalayam in Mathakal, a remote coastal area in Jaffna district.

The idea of Community Based Computer Training Center (CBCTC) was proposed by TechShack, VanniTech's Employment Incubation Center , and came into reality with the inauguration of Kiruba Computer Learning Center in April 2005. The objective of the CBCTC is to enable people of remote villages to be computer-literate, i.e. handling the keyboard and mouse; knowing an operating system like Windows XP; having a working knowledge of popular software applications like MS Word and MS Excel; and using the Internet to communicate and browse the Web for information.

VanniTech was founded by ITTPO with the objective of developing the North-East of Sri Lanka using IT and other high-tech disciplines. Since the scope of work of the CBCTC falls within the purview of VanniTech, it undertook the implementation of the CBCTC project. TRRO, Tamil Refugee Relief Organization based in California , willingly came forward to fund the pioneering model in Mathakal, a typical community environment that needs development initiatives. ITTPO and TRRO formed a unique partnership in realizing the successful implementation of Kiruba Computer learning center in Mathakal. The center is operated and managed by TechShack using VanniTech graduates. Capital cost to set-up the facilities was USD 5,000 with an annual running cost of USD 1,500. The center was started with only 04 computers and a lecturer.

Approximately 60 students and 05 teachers have already been trained in a complete “Computer Basics” program that is free of charge. The school staff also use the computer center and resources for their administrative operations occasionally. Every month TechShack sends progress reports to the donors. It also reports on student performance to the school administration on a monthly basis.

TechShack is currently working on a plan of expansion worth USD 6,000 to enhance the scope of training of the center. Spurred on by the unprecedented and successful operation of the center for more than 07 months, the donor has enthusiastically responded with the required funding for 06 more computers.

“Thoroughly impressed with the set-up” expressed by the Project Sponsor, who is part of the Tamil Diaspora, during his visit to the centre. He further added “the VanniTech graduate running the program was enthusiastic, professional and appreciative of the opportunity to teach there”.

Mr. Sylvester Singarayer, Director of Career Development - VanniTech, said, “There are many more remote villages in the North-East with no access to computers. We believe that these training centers would empower local people who are socially and economically disadvantaged with opportunities. TechShack is very happy to be associated with this endeavor”.

TechShack is planning to replicate this model in two other places of the North-East in the near future and entertaining queries from many prospective donors for setting up similar CBCTC at their villages. TechShack would also welcome donors to come forward to fund the setting-up CBCTC's in their own native villages.
