    VanniTech debuts VanniVision '04

VanniTech, Kilinochchi. – March 06, 2004 The graduates of Vanni Institute of Technology (VanniTech) showcased their technology prowess through VanniVision ’04, a two day exhibition held on the 5th and 6th March, at the VanniTech campus in Kilinochchi.

About 1000 visitors which included the local community, NGOs, INGOs and schools were treated to a feast of hi-tech extravaganza, the appetizer being the Palm PDA application developed by VanniTech with which the security guard entered the visitors’ information at the gate.


A Software Solution Demonstration
An enthralled audience paying attention to a demonstration of a software solution.



Some of the notable technologies at display included an automated water tap whose circuit was designed indigenously using low-cost components, database designed using open-source software, computer networks with WAN/LAN setup, and Field Deployable Projects (FDP) that were part of the students’ study program.

Several electronic gadgets including digital pen, wireless security cameras, video conferencing devices, fiber SAN switch etc. were also displayed at the exhibition.

 
 

The Field Deployable Projects include database solutions for Governmental and Non-Governmental organizations notably NECORD (funded by ADB), United Nations - World Food Programme, District Secretariat and the Zonal Education Office. The projects are to be deployed soon at these and other locations.The first place which held an award of SLR50000 (US$525) was nabbed by “field man”, a talking robot, which greeted the visitors when approached.

The chief guest, Mr. Puleethevan, Secretary General, Peace Secretariat, Kilinochchi, who inaugurated the exhibition, was quoted as saying that Erik Solheim and other foreign dignitaries take VanniTech as an example as to what the Tamils can achieve in the reconstruction of the North-East.

Also a software architect from the technology giant HP, USA who was visiting the exhibition exclaimed that he was proud to see the technological capabilities of the VanniTech graduates.
